When
he retired in 1968, it was
the world's largest black-owned insurance company. As one of the nation's first
black actuaries, successful businessman and community leader, Asa Spaulding
was a role model for people across the country. Born in Columbus County, NC, Spaulding went to work for a relative, Charles C. Spaulding, who was building an American success story in Durham's "Black Wall Street" of minority-owned businesses. After attending the National Training School at Howard University, he graduated magna cum laude from New York University in 1930 with an accounting degree and then a Masters degree in mathematics and actuarial science from the University of Michigan in 1932. Upon returning to the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1933, he served as actuary until 1958, as well as Assistant Secretary (1945-48), Vice President, Actuary & Controller (1948-58) and Director (beginning in 1938). He served as president from 1959 to his retirement in 1968. He also served in various positions with other enterprises, including Mechanics and Farmers Bank, Winston Mutual Life Insurance Company, Dunbar Life Insurance Company, Mutual Savings and Loan Association and Realty Services, Inc. Spaulding also was engaged in various public service activities, including his periodic producing "Your Community", a weekly television show, and adviser to Durham Broadcasting Enterprises. In 1956, he was a member of the U.S. delegation to the UNESCO General Conference. He served as vice-chairman of the NC advisory committee to the Commission on Civil Rights (1959-1964), steering committee member for the Urban Coalition, among others. He was married to Elna Bridgeforth Spaulding, who was deeply involved with Women-in-Action and the Prevention of Violence and Its Causes, Inc. Among his honorary degrees, he received recognition from Duke University, Howard University, Morgan State College, St. Andrews College, Shaw University and the University of North Carolina. |
